Known as "Guldbron" (The Golden Bridge) and as big as a football field - the main bridge for road traffic as well as pedestrians and cyclists that will connect the Old Town of Stockholm with Södermalm was designed by Ramboll's bridge experts on behalf of Skanska and is a part of Stockholm City's New Slussen project, construction of which started in 2016.

The bridge will form an integral part of Slussen, one of the busiest transport hubs in the capital where an average of 400,000 people travel by public transport every day, and the number is expected to double by 2030. Slussen was built 80 years ago and is now being refurbished to be able to carry the increasing number of people who pass daily.

The bridge is designed by the global architects office Foster + Partners. Ramboll's role includes planning, design, drawings and calculations of the steel bridge that is 140 meters long, 45 meters wide, with a varying height of one to seven meters and weighing about 3,400 tonnes.

The team of experts that has worked with the bridge belongs to Ramboll's bridge unit in Luleå, Sweden.

- At Ramboll in Luleå, we have extensive experience of bridge constructions. The five who have worked the most with The Golden Bridge have a total of 150 years of experience. They have designed 200-300 steel bridges together, says Julia Elhag, bridge designer and unit manager for the bridge unit in Luleå.

- The biggest challenge in our work is that the bridge has a large variation in cross-sectional height and a varying cross-sectional geometry in general. In addition, the construction is much more than what will be seen. The bridge is as big as a football field and weighs 3,400 tons, says Victor Vestman, bridge designer at Ramboll.

- It feels fantastic to be part of a project like this. It is a bridge that will mean a lot for a long time. Most people who grow up now in Sweden will cross this bridge during their lifetime. Many bridges we make are more anonymous, you drive over them and do not think much about them, says Tomas Bergström, project manager.

The bridge was opened to the public in October 2020.
