This time around we meet Mattias Almqvist who has joined our Social and Economic Impacts team in Stockholm.
Learn more about the new profile in this interview.
What do you work with?
I mainly assess effects of government policy and regulation using economic analysis. I have a background analysing regulation in sectors like energy, transport, telecom, postal and payments as well as analysing competition cases, sometimes in front of courts.
I hope that my work and efforts at Ramboll will help societies transition to a more sustainable path and that my work will help link the services in Ramboll Management Consulting to the more technical ones in other parts of Ramboll. This combination really gives us an edge when working to empower sustainable change.
What made you want to join Ramboll Management Consulting?
Two main factors made me want to join Ramboll. First, the fact that Ramboll is a truly value-driven organisation with a focus on sustainability attracted me. Working towards something I believe is meaningful is becoming increasingly important for me.
Secondly, I wanted to be part of an organisation with a broad range of professional expertise. Coming from a specialised economic consultancy firm, I have realised that you most often need people with more than one expertise to solve society’s most important and interesting challenges.
What is the most significant professional experience you have had so far?
For one and a half year I spent almost all my time working on a big European Commission project. We analysed the effects of an EU regulation of the fees paid between banks for every payment card transaction. Managing a big and politically sensitive project with many road bumps really challenged me and made me a better project manager.
It also taught me how to work most effectively despite physical distance to my colleagues - as I was often the only team member working from the Swedish office (the remaining team was spread out across 5 different locations and offices). I am glad I have learned how to collaborate from a distance ahead of the corona crisis.

Meet Mattias Almqvist. He recently joined Ramboll Management Consulting from Copenhagen Economics and he will be working from our Stockholm office.
What is the most exciting development within your field of work?
I sense a greater awareness and interest from clients in using insights from economics to solve problems. Answers to many important questions benefit from such insights. For instance: How can we make polluters pay for the true cost of pollution? Why do internet platforms foster tech giants? How can we design public policy and regulation to achieve political goals? How can corporate executives use customer data to learn what their customers want?
A growing number of organisations use economic insights more and more to answer these questions - and I truely believe that it makes a difference.
How are you planning on bringing this to our clients?
By riding on this wave and show clients that economic insights can often provide intuitive and clever solutions to their problems. Ramboll has a great position to tap into this trend thanks to its many and large clients whose core business is designing the backbone of societies. I hope that I and Ramboll Management Consulting can continue adding this to the existing service offering of other Ramboll units.
How do you define the higher purpose of what you do?
Improving society by providing commercially viable services. In that order and including both ingredients.
What is your best source of inspiration?
Nature! I experience my happiest and most insightful moments outside while running in forests, trekking in mountains or being on water.
At my desk I always have...?
Water glasses and coffee mugs. Too many of each of them.
If I had the skills, I would love to be…?
… able to sing or play an instrument. Unfortunately, I am terrible at both.
