Chris Halliwell has 20 years’ experience in environmental assessment and management, working primarily for private sector clients across the globe. In the early stages of his career he was involved in numerous aquatic investigations, often concerning the behaviour and fate of contaminants in the environment. A strong understanding of oil and chemical behaviour in the environment led to emergency planning and response projects, including hands on oil spill response experience whilst working at the UK’s National Chemical Emergency Centre. His experience working in the marine environment led to offshore baseline survey work and then to the preparation of full environmental impact assessments (EIA), including onshore and offshore environmental and social impact assessments (ESIA) for the oil and gas industry. Over the last 10 years he has provided consultancy support to international financial institutions (IFI), either working directly for IFIs or for developers seeking investment. He has managed the health, safety and environment (HSE) and social due diligence aspects of some high profile development projects on behalf of IFIs. In fulfilling these roles he has gained a comprehensive understanding of World Bank/IFC safeguard policies and performance standards, international treaties and conventions and the Equator Principles. Chris holds a BSc in Environmental Science, a BOSIET offshore safety certificate and is an associate of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).
