Nick Clarke is the Director for Ports and Marine at Ramboll based in the UK. Nick is a guiding figure in Ramboll’s global ports environmental and engineering project portfolio, which has projects across the UK, Baltic, Mediterranean, Middle East, Africa, Asia and the South Seas. He leads the Ports and Coastal Marine division in Ramboll that specialises in the planning, consenting and design of cruise and RoRo terminals, container and bulk terminals, marinas, shipyards, oil & gas and offshore wind ports. With more than 20 years in marine civil engineering, Nick has been responsible for the design of ports, harbours, breakwaters, and marine structures in the UK and overseas. He is passionate about achieving end-user satisfaction and challenging engineers to consider whole project cost and maximising client return on investment. He has successfully managed a variety of large and complex projects including the design of Liverpool Cruise Liner Terminal, which includes ro-ro linkspan for HGV and major concrete floating structures. He has excellent experience in the design of submerged bridge foundations and floating structures. He has also been called as an Expert Witness for maritime cases and has also undertaken studies regarding vessel collision on bridge structures in terms of both mitigation and designing for vessel impacts. Nick has undertaken research in both the fields of physical and computational modelling of waves, physical modelling of wave loads on Single Layer armour units, followed by Post Graduate research in Computational Fluid Dynamics primarily concerned with emulating the forces and pressures exerted by breaking waves and wave slam forces on structures. Nick spent one year as visiting lecturer, University of Southampton, and taught subjects including catchment analysis, storm sewer design, water supply & distribution, and reservoir design. In addition to being a Chartered Civil Engineer, Nick is also a Chartered Environmentalist and a Chartered Water and Environmental Manager.
