Crispin Matson joined the practice as a Director in 2009.

Crispin leads the development of renewable energy projects including generation, distribution and use throughout the UK and Ireland. He is responsible for large-scale energy masterplanning, district heating, CHP, biomass and biogas generation, solar energy, geothermal, onshore wind and energy efficiency projects. Crispin leads the continued development of these services, providing strategic direction and actively driving expansion. His emphasis is on technical excellence combined with energy-efficient design.

In addition to his strategic role, Crispin facilitates knowledge sharing across disciplines. He also promotes strong links with our overseas operations and related services in the wider Ramboll group.

With over 25 years in the industry, most recently at the leading edge of the design of renewable systems in buildings, his experience covers a wide range of project types and scales. Always client-focused, his solutions respond to the particular opportunities of each project. He explores every possibility in the service of delivering long-term value in a sustainable way.

Crispin is passionate about the role engineers will play in facing the challenges of climate change. Keenly aware of both the scientific and policy developments in this area, Crispin is a member of the ICE London Energy Panel as well as being a regular speaker at conferences on renewable energy and a director of a wind-farm co-op. Crispin takes an integrated approach exploring how energy is generated, transmitted, stored and used not only in buildings but also in the wider transport infrastructure. Crispin sees a role for Ramboll UK engineers in moving the country towards a zero-carbon economy, drawing on the Ramboll Group's expertise in Denmark and across Scandinavia.

A very positive person, Crispin is excited about the potential the Ramboll network has for tackling complex multi-disciplinary projects and sees a possibly unique breadth of expertise there that will enable the company to help society address the bigger issues. He is a strong believer in engineers being more proactive in their communities.

Recent projects

Parkstone Grammar School

The pupil intake age at Parkstone Grammar has been lowered from 12 to 11 years, bringing it into line with others in the Poole area. To accommodate the additional students the school needed to expand its teaching facilities. We provided structural and infrastructure engineering for a new Art & Technology block, additional parking and the refurbishment of the existing Art & Technology building.

The new block is located on a sloping site close to the front entrance of the school. Ground modelling helped determine the optimum build level, minimising groundwork costs. Build time was also a challenge as refurbishment of the older building could only commence once the new one was ready. The school remained open throughout.

The new three-storey building has a grid layout, providing 19 classrooms, staff areas, stores and toilets. Accommodation is located on both sides of the central circulation corridors. On the upper level the roof is stepped back, affording a terrace across two bays of the grid. The outdoor study terrace is enclosed by an upstand parapet and accessed from the circulation corridor. In future, the terrace could be roofed for additional classrooms.

The continuous concrete strip foundations support sleeper walls. Vertical slots punched in the walls provide windows with solid inner leaf infill. The floor slabs are precast concrete sitting on the sleeper walls, topped with precast roof slabs. A small plant area is located on the roof to provide AHU ventilation. The aesthetic concrete walls in the classrooms encourage natural ventilation by maximising the thermal mass exposed to the air.
