The World’s Tallest Twisted Twin Towers Realised

Rising at the heart of the Malaysian capital is an iconic piece of architecture achieved through Ramboll’s advanced computational design.

Within Kuala Lumpur’s golden triangle, 8 Conlay becomes the latest integrated mixed-use development to shape the city skyline with its 72-storey hotel tower and two residential towers at 61- and 56-storeys poised atop a 10-storey retail podium. Designed by RSP Architects, the towers’ possess a sinuous curvilinear silhouette – inspired by the Chinese numeral ‘8’ – that dramatically punctuates the surrounding urban context.

The residential towers eccentric geometry presented a specific structural and constructional test of the design. Offering full structural consulting services, Ramboll’s solution was to rotate the towers on their Z-axis to meet the architects’ vision. Our detailed parametric optimisation to align the building’s centre of gravity with its centre of support played a crucial role in capturing the towers’ signature torsioning effect. 8 Conlay’s residences are in line to become the world’s tallest twisted twin towers when completed in 2023.

Balancing Design and Construction

Where the concept of finding balance is the main focus of this MYR5.4b project, the choice of building materials and responding to climate are also priorities. For client and project team, the development concept and design dictates the type of materials used in order to achieve a befitting look and feel while simultaneously maximising constructability.
