Hong Kong Battery Recycling Centre

Fully integrated recycling facility in Hong Kong for local recycling of waste lead acid battery (WLAB) into reusable raw material.
Hong Kong Battery Recycling Centre.

Located in EcoPark, Hong Kong Battery Recycling Centre (HKBR) is the only battery recycling plant deploying state-of-the-art technology in Hong Kong that locally converts over 90% of Waste Lead Acid Battery (WLAB) into reusable raw material in a sustainable manner, fully compliant with all relevant rules and regulations. The plant is designed to handle a throughput of 41,600 tpa batteries or 33,300 tpa of lead bullion production.

WLAB is a chemical waste. If not disposed of properly, WLAB can cause long term adverse consequences for soil and water systems, particularly in a densely populated city as Hong Kong.

As the environmental consultant, Ramboll supported HKBR on the required environmental license applications for its construction and operations. Throughout the proposed development of HKBR, Ramboll assisted across the design planning and project commissioning stages, proposing strategies and provided environmental assessments to comply with the statutory requirements, planned and supervised testing and commissioning of the plant and continual liaison with Hong Kong’s Environmental Protection Department to facilitate the application of licenses and put forward proposals for process update and phased implementation of the project.

“Ramboll’s full-spectrum sustainability advisory services helped the client secure the required licenses and comply with permit requirements for construction and operation of the plant, leading to a positive impact on the environment by promoting “local recycling" and ensuring that the environment quality is minimally affected by battery recycling operation.”
