Conor O’Loughlin

After high school, I attended university full-time but withdrew due to personal circumstances. In 2016, I joined Ramboll as a trainee technician without any engineering or design experience. I doubted my ability to pursue an engineering degree further but in 2018 I was offered an apprenticeship in Civil Engineering at LJMU.
I have now completed my degree with first-class honours in 2022. I received support from colleagues throughout, allowing me to focus on studies during deadlines and exams. The apprenticeship format allowed for the knowledge gained at Ramboll to compliment my studies and vice-versa.
In 2022 I was shortlisted in the Apprentice of the year ACE Award category and today I run my own projects as the Civil Engineering lead. Working with clients, developing designs & assisting new graduates and apprentices with their development. I will be sitting my End Point Assessment in March 2024 & I could not have done this without the support that I have received from Ramboll.

Just under 2 months after finishing my GCSE’s I had my first day working from Ramboll’s Chester office. As a nervous 16-year-old, to know that my line manager came from London to greet me, introduce me, and show me the basics meant so much and definitely made me feel welcome. As soon as I stepped into the building, I felt like one of the team.
My colleagues are friendly and hard working, they support me to grow and develop. The flexibility has also allowed me to support my family and progress in my personal life when I have been needed, even if that means having to take my sister to school or take and hour here or there for driving lessons.
I am currently in my second year at college and almost into my third year of my apprenticeship. I can confidently say that I can see how much I have grown, and I can comfortably say that I do want to spend many, many more years with Ramboll.
