Ramboll apprentice Dan Aston

My name is Dan Aston and I’m a Principal Electrical Engineer. I first left school at 16 and started working on building sites as brick layers labourer. After two years of site work where I was able to experience different trades, I pursued my interest in electrical engineering with an electrical apprenticeship. Following four years on site, I became a trainee electrical engineer completing my ONC and HNC in building services. I now produce the electrical designs for buildings and have worked at Ramboll for three years.

For anyone considering an apprenticeship I would advise them to have a clear goal or output of what they want out of the course, whether that be to aid them in their direct career path or help them understand what others around them expect from their job role. Secondly, it’s crucial your employer and line manager buy in and agree with the apprenticeship. Having a good mentor or role model is key for success. Your time will need to be split across your workload and the apprenticeship, being exposed to new experiences to practise your lessons learnt.
