Building energy islands in balance with nature
Denmark needs renewable energy generated from two energy islands linked to offshore wind farms to achieve its ambitious climate goals by 2030. Ramboll will assess impact of the planned Baltic Sea energy island on the surrounding marine environment.
- To help limit global warming at 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, Denmark will need to cut 26 million tons of carbon emissions by 2030. That's about as many tons as the country has cut since 1990. The country has passed legislation to reduce carbon emissions by 70% below 1990 levels, by 2030.
- The Danish government has proposed development of two energy islands with offshore wind in the North and Baltic seas to help generate 5GW of renewable energy and meet the 2030 target. Offshore wind is a cornerstone of the green energy transition and a Danish industrial stronghold.
- Natura 2000 is a coordinated network of protected areas covering land and marine territory in the EU, that offers a haven to valuable and threatened species and habitats in Europe.
