Crescent Park Revitalization

Infusing sustainability into hurricane-damaged property

Crescent Park in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA is a 20-acre, urban linear park connecting the community and visitors to the Mississippi Riverfront. Part of a larger master plan envisioning a new, greener future for the City of New Orleans and its riverfront, Crescent Park was revitalized following Hurricane Katrina in a project that has transformed a declining stretch of waterfront to a community asset with sustainable design.

A proud example of Ramboll’s liveable cities concept

To support the project, Ramboll evaluated the conversion of several thousand feet of dock into outdoor recreational use with access via footbridges and walkways and assessed contaminated soils and surfaces. The project comprised performing heavy metal soil sampling, conducting a human health risk assessment and developing a remedial action plan. Ramboll also conducted soil removal and implemented institutional controls that supported various types of public activities for the future park including landscaping, bike paths, a dog run, multi-use pavilions, greenspace and event venues.

As a result of Ramboll’s expertise, this project earned a “Ready for Reuse” certification from USEPA, and the area is now a proud example of Ramboll’s liveable cities concept. Ramboll continues to work toward its liveable cities goals by bringing the best value to society, creating a culture of inspiration, and implementing better-integrated urban infrastructure and design while at the same time managing challenges and reducing environment-related risks.
