Carbon capture, utilisation and storage

Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) plays a key role in achieving net zero. With a big portfolio of successfully completed projects, Ramboll is a leading advisor in this fast-growing industry.

Carbon Capture Duiven

The path to decarbonisation runs through carbon capture

CCUS is a viable solution for hard-to-abate industries, enabling them to continue operations while significantly reducing their carbon emissions.
Carbon capture technologies capture CO2 emissions directly at their origin. The capturing process effectively prevents these greenhouse gases from being released into the atmosphere, significantly reducing the impact on global warming.
Ramboll offers world-class experience in carbon capture, utilisation, transport, and storage and acts as a frontrunner of the technologies used at all phases of CCUS.
Our expertise builds on many years of experience within capture of CO2 from industrial sources such as cement, steel, refineries, waste-to-energy, biomass, natural gas, pulp & paper, and lime factories or through direct air capture.
We are more than 50 dedicated carbon capture project managers and specialists and more than 200 project managers and specialists offering transport and logistics, interim storage, shipping, geological storage, and power-to-X services in connection to CCUS.

carbon capture projects

Ramboll has worked on more than 180 carbon capture projects and more than 210 successful green hydrogen projects.

CCUS is one of the few technology options that can significantly reduce direct CO2 emissions (including process emissions) from the industry sector, which produces one-quarter of global CO2 emissions

We provide a unique mix of technical and commercial advisory which is essential for successful CCUS projects

We embrace work in the full spectrum of the CCUS value chain, from carbon capture, to transport, utilisation, and /or storage. Our services encompass all project phases, providing the necessary technical and commercial advisory services required to navigate the complexities of CCUS projects:
  • Project development: Ramboll knows and understands the carbon and energy market trends, drivers, challenges, business models, and prerequisites for operational excellence. We offer strategic and commercial expertise to enable successful execution of CCUS projects, including the development of road maps, go-to-market strategies, business cases, and market sizing
  • Outline design: We have comprehensive experience with carbon capture design, integration, and cost, which is essential for a successful CCUS project. We have experience with all facets of carbon capture, including amine capture, oxyfuel, membrane, cryo, chilled ammonia, HPC, PSA, CO2 compression, CO2 pipeline, storage, loading, and liquefaction
  • Permitting: We provide our clients with support in obtaining permits and maintaining compliance and are well-versed in the various issues unique to CCUS, including air quality, risk management, ESG strategies, and decarbonisation strategies.
  • Procurement: During the procurement process, we act as the clients’ Owner’s Engineer/ EPCM, where Ramboll is responsible for contract and project management of the EPC project. Moreover, we are highly skilled with Engineering of Balance of Plant (BOP) and design review of the carbon capture plant.
  • Implementation: Ramboll masters all the technical disciplines associated with the design, construction and operation of carbon capture facilities including contract management.

We know the carbon capture industry

:
While proven capture technologies are available and the strategic objective is clear, challenges remain in deploying CCUS on a large scale. Appropriate financial frameworks are being developed, the industry is young, and the technologies remain costly.
We know the carbon capture technology and EPC suppliers and we are skilled in identifying potential issues and pitfalls within carbon capture integration. Furthermore, we understand the business case and know how to avoid high CAPEX cost, while enabling low OPEX costs.
We are acquainted with all technical risks and environmental challenges associated with both interim and final storage. We understand the regulatory framework related to CO2 transport, and we know the uncertainties for CO2 offtake in power-to-X.
