NEBA methodology earns recognition at environmental awards
The winning submission related to Ramboll Environ’s use of net environmental benefit analysis (NEBA) within offshore decommissioning projects, which has the potential to reduce North Sea decommissioning liabilities by tens of billions of pounds whilst simultaneously protecting the environment and reducing risks.
Ramboll Environ applied NEBA methodology as a way of measuring the loss of ecosystem services not accounted for in conventional comparative assessment processes. It helps to identify the appropriate balance between plausible risks and benefits and associated environmental, economic and social tradeoffs amongst competing alternatives.
The award was collected by Matt Davies, UK Managing Principal, and Nathan Swankie, Principal, Edinburgh, at an awards ceremony in London on 28th September, after hosting a panel session on the subject of offshore decommissioning at Environment Analyst’s Business Summit earlier in the day.
Matt Davies said “We are delighted to have won the business innovation award and are grateful to Environment Analyst for recognising the importance of our ability to use NEBA, a methodology that is commonplace during oil spill response planning, to give due consideration to marine ecosystems during the decommissioning of offshore infrastructure. The judges were able to see how our innovative and solution-focussed thinking is creating real value for our clients and the environment.”
Presenting the award was Environment Analyst editorial director, Liz Trew, who said "This award goes to the team at Ramboll Environ for its alternative net environmental benefit analysis approach to impact assessment in the offshore oil and gas decommissioning field, which the EA judging panel felt was worthy for challenging the norms of established practices with the aim of bettering the environmental outcome through building in the economic value of natural systems into conventional economic modelling."
The Environmental Analyst Business Excellence Awards recognise business achievement in the environmental consultancy sector. A full list of winners and Environment Analyst's press release can be found on their website.
