Principal Doug Daugherty has co-authored a chapter in Responsible Mining: Case Studies in Managing Social & Environmental Risks in the Developed World, a trade book published by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) in January.
The chapter, Molycorp’s Project Phoenix—Water and Reagent Recycling with Clean Power, details Molycorp’s Mountain Pass rare-earth resource and processing facility in southeastern California as it aims to become one of the largest rare-earth production centers in the world in a sustainable way that minimize environmental impacts. Doug and his co-author focus on the facility’s unified approach to reduction that includes recycling waste streams into reagents using on-site, natural gas-fired cogeneration of electricity and steam.
Responsible Mining is a collection of case studies of best practices with examples from four continents. Organized around ten sustainability principles required of International Council on Mining and Metals members, the book addresses nearly every environmental and social consequence of mining in developed countries.
