Since Romania joined the European Union in 2007, the country’s water sector has been gradually improved. However, as there is still room for further improvement, the sector is still investing to improve all parts of the water cycle, from water supply to wastewater treatment.

Most recently, the water operators RAJA CONSTANTA – which is the largest water operator in the country – and AQUASERV, the regional water operator in Mures County in Central Romania, have selected Ramboll to lead and implement two large and important development projects.

Extension and rehabilitation of important water supply systems

The objective of the project for RAJA CONSTANTA is to ensure high performance of the waterworks, and the project includes rehabilitation, modernization and extension of wastewater collection systems and wastewater treatment plants.

Through this project, which is the largest of its kind in Europe, Ramboll is going to provide specific technical assistance in the supervision of the execution of 50 works contracts for the extension and rehabilitation of the water supply systems and the waste water collection systems in Constanta, Ialomita, Calarasi, Dambovita and Brasov counties.

The other project for AQUASERV is also a development project. Ramboll is to help AQUASERV upgrade the water and wastewater infrastructure in the Mures region.

More specifically, Ramboll is going to conduct a feasibility study (including a Cost Benefit Analysis). This study is necessary for the continuation of the local strategy for the development of the water and wastewater sector in order to reach the targets assumed by Romania through the Accession Treaty to the European Union.
