Ramboll expert wins the Danish Bridge and Tunnel Award 2020

Jan Vig Nielsen, Head of Department in Ramboll Transport in Denmark, has won the Danish Bridge and Tunnel Award 2020.

The Award jury highlighted Jan’s special interest in, and deep understanding of, concrete statics within the last ten years. They pointed also to his ability to ensure better use of differentiated calculation methods to extend the life of concrete bridges, increase their load-bearing capacity, and reduce the extent of concrete strengthening to the great benefit of society both in terms of economy and sustainability.

The award is established by the Danish members of the Nordic Road Association (NVF) and the board of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) and was presented at a ceremony at the Danish Bridge day in Odense, on Tuesday.

“I am very happy that spending ten years looking at old drawings of bridges finally pays of,”, Jan says with a smile. He continues: “I am proud to receive this award and the acknowledgement that follows it. Utilising the maximum capacity and choosing the right strategies for existing bridges is done in close collaboration with our colleagues doing inspections and assessment of durability, and I would especially like to thank my highly-skilled colleagues from whom I have learned so much. Also, a big thanks to our clients for appreciating our services and results.”

Jan currently leads a team of 23 employees working within the field of monitoring and analysis of existing structures.

“The objective of the award is to stimulate and develop the professional environment within bridges in Denmark and to increase future generations' knowledge of, and interest in, the bridge area. Jan’s work indeed contributes to this,” says Asger Knudsen, Chairman of the Danish Bridge Nordic Road Association and country market director for Transport in Ramboll Denmark.

He continues: “Sustainability is a huge focus area within the transport and infrastructure industry and Jan’s outstanding work points at specific methods that introduce a more environmentally and economically sustainable approach when working within asset management of bridge structures. This has great societal gains and is acknowledged by the award,” says Asger Knudsen.

The award includes a travel scholarship of DKK 20,000.
