Ramboll selected as consultant to Europe’s first hydrogen production plant in the gigawatt class
Swiss based company H2 Energy is planning a multimillion investment in Europe’s very first hydrogen production plant in the GW class, accelerating the transition from fossil fuels to green fuels generated from wind energy resources. Ramboll will carry out concept and safety studies as well as the local planning and environmental permitting process.
The new facility, which will be located in Esbjerg, Denmark, is being developed by the Swiss based company H2 Energy and will have a capacity of 1 GW. It will produce 18 tonnes/hr of green hydrogen from wind energy for light and heavy-duty vehicles, e-HRS (hydrogen battery charger for electric vehicles) or it will be directed to other industrial applications such as ammonia or green fuel production. The hydrogen is planned to be distributed both through pressurised containers and through a future pipeline.
The plant will use proven H2 technology in a scaled-up plant configuration and the design will be standardised to build more similar or larger plants in Denmark and across Europe.
Ramboll has been selected to carry out concept and safety studies as well as the local planning and environmental permitting process.
“We are once again excited to play our role in the green energy transition by taking part in such a great project for the city of Esbjerg and Denmark alike. Contributing to this project is also strategically important to us and we look forward to support H2 Energy with our multidisciplinary capabilities and technical know-how”, says Søren Eg Hansen, Project Director at Ramboll.
“H2 Energy is committed to make strong contributions to the decarbonisation of the energy sector on the basis of green hydrogen. We are equally excited to have Ramboll onboard as they not only have the wide range of competencies needed, but also the capacity and local insight to ensure that we succeed with this landmark project”, adds Clifford zur Nieden at H2 Energy.
The city of Esbjerg is undergoing a green transformation and the hydrogen production plant is the newest addition to a series of other investments that put Esbjerg on the world map as an innovative city that contributes to achieving Denmark’s ambitious carbon reduction targets.
Steen Hommel, Secretary of State for Trade and Global Sustainability at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, adds:
“Invest in Denmark, which is part of the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, works to attract foreign investments within Power-to-X projects, wind and other cleantech technologies. We are very content that our cooperation with H2 Energy and the municipality of Esbjerg has resulted in plans for a large Power-to-X project in Esbjerg. The project would not only create new green jobs in Esbjerg but also support the green transition and the ambitious goal to reduce CO2 emissions in Denmark by 70% by 2030”.
The hydrogen plant is expected to have its first production at the end of 2023 and a sequential start-up during 2024.
