Rising 35 meters up into the air, Nanchang Waves majestically adorns the natural landscape of the Chinese Jiangxi Province. In the early stages of the project, the complexity of the construction of the landscape-based community centre required a close cooperation between client Vanke, architect Nordic Office of Architecture and Ramboll as structural engineer. The impressive result speaks for itself.
A UFO-like 360 degrees viewing deck on top of a 7 m wide double helix-shaped stair is the centrepiece of Nanchang Waves. Besides consisting of a 675 m2 observation deck, Nanchang Waves further includes various other amenities such as cafés, offices, galleries as well as arenas for events and urban agriculture gardens for the local schools. All in all, the podium houses retail and recreational areas summing up to about 3.000 m2.
- The inspiration for Nanchang Waves derives from the surrounding waterscapes in the region. The elegant helix-formed stair allows for a 360 degrees view of the area when walking up to the panoramic gallery at the top, Thomas Lindgård Fagernes, architect and design director at Nordic Office of Architecture, says.
With its unique integration of urban life and nature, Nanchang Waves forms the heart of a large residential development in the Jiangxi Province. Commissioned to carry out the development of the structural design, Ramboll made this integration possible.
- It is great to have an opportunity to get involved in the concept stage of a project where the design is still flexible. Then we can take full advantage of the benefits of a collaborative and integrated design process and maximize value creation for the building owner says Swati A Shah, Director Buildings & Project Excellence.
In collaboration with Nordic Office of Architecture, the roof of the podium has been designed to become a garden with public access while the helix tower observation levels are intended to connect the building seamlessly to the surrounding landscape.
- Our aim with the structural design was to create new and versatile urban spaces that enhance the natural landscape of the Jiangxi region, while inviting nature inside, Riccardo Pedroni, senior engineer in High-Rise Buildings at Ramboll, explains.
The Nanchang Waves-building has an estimated value of 130 million NOK.
