Vulnerable spots around the settlements of Sundstrup, have historically experienced minor floods. Some actions have been taken to mitigate the risk, but the future climate change is expected to increase the probability of flooding and larger areas will be at risk.
Viborg Municipality will decide on further efforts for the area, and as a basis, Rambøll has conducted the analysis and made recommendations. The report highlights issues and proposes flood adaptation actions.
Based on different extreme water level statistics and hydraulic modelling, maps have been produced showing floods for various events in 2050. The extent and consequences of expected floods in 2050 have further been assessed and various adaptation measures proposed, which can be combined in different ways.
Virksund levee and sluice system is assessed on the basis of a technical review. Vulnerability and potential damages to installations and operation was identified.
Implementation of coastal protection measures affects the surrounding nature, and negative and positive influences are assessed. One of the challenges is that a large part of the coastal area has protected natural habitats and is designated as the Natura 2000 habitat.
Construction costs for possible efforts are generally assessed. In addition, proposals have been made for different financial schemes for the allocation of construction and operating expenses. The project is presented at a public citizen meeting.
