Ramboll has designed an artificial reef in Hvide Sande which will both improve the conditions for surfing and serve as coastal protection.
The new artificial surf reef will be positioned south of the entrance to the Port of Hvide Sande, near the southern breakwater. Hvide Sande is located on the west coast of Denmark and is a well-known surfing spot, which is visited by surfing tourists from the Northern Europe every year.
Due to a relatively large fetch and the presence of breakwaters at the Port of Hvide Sande, the spot is internationally known for providing high quality waves, which are good for surfing activities. But since the extension of the southern breakwater in 2013, the beach morphology have changed significantly, which have affected the surfing conditions negatively.
Innovative designThe new artificial surfing reef is one of the first of its kind. It is an innovative dynamic structure, constructed from sand which is periodically dredged from the Port of Hvide Sande.
The reef has two main purposes: the primary purpose is to improve the surfing conditions in the area, by reconstructing the sand bars to obtain their original functionality (same functionality as before the breakwater extension). The secondary purpose is to ensure that the surfing reef will function as part of the coastal protection in the area south of the southern breakwater, by serving as part of the ongoing beach nourishment.
Ramboll's role in the project is client consultant. This includes the design of the surfing reef, using state-of-the-art computer models. The design comprises optimization of surfing conditions, minimisation of maintenance costs, design of maintenance plan, and optimization of the reefs' functionality in terms of coastal protection. The design process has included development of new in-house tools for evaluating the surfing amenity, among other factors.
Ramboll has significant experience within the field of coastal engineering, including application of state-of-the-art computer models for design of coastal-stable and dynamically stable surf reefs and coastal protection structures. Moreover, this includes prediction of long-term beach morphology changes.
