Emirates Waste To Energy Company, a partnership between Masdar and Bee’ah is developing the first waste-to-energy facility in the UAE. The facility, which will be located in Sharjah, will contribute to Sharjah's effort to reach its "zero waste-to-landfill" target by 2020 and the UAE to deliver its 2021 goal of diverting 75% of solid waste from landfills.
The facility will process around 37.5 tonnes of municipal solid waste per hour and will be located adjacent to Bee’ah’s existing Material Recovery Facility inside Bee’ah’s Waste Management Complex in Sharjah, where the emirate’s waste is collected, sorted and recycled and residual waste is sent to landfills.
Ramboll has been engaged by Masdar and Bee’ah to advise on the planning and implementation of the green-field waste-to-energy facility. Ramboll is evaluating the feasibility and design of the facility, including tender documents and contract negotiations on behalf of our client. The waste-to-energy facility will receive approximately 300,000 tonnes of residual waste a year and convert it into 30 megawatts of power.
The project is expected to break ground at the end of 2017 and become operational by the end of 2020.
