Ramboll was retained by Horizonte Minerals to prepare the environmental & social impact assessment (ESIA) for the company’s Niquel Vermelho Mining Project in the Amazon region in the Para State of Brazil. The Vermelho project aims to supply nickel and cobalt to the electric vehicle battery market.
The ESIA is an essential part of the permitting process for Vermelho and expected to lead to the award of the preliminary license. The integrated assessment will consider Brazilian legal requirements and the International Finance Corporation performance standards (IFC). It will reflect the current physical, biological and social settings and include information on water quality, air and noise, soil, flora and fauna, socioeconomic considerations, community health and safety, resettlement and cultural heritage.
In addition to local permit studies, further social and environmental impact assessments will be undertaken in line with International Finance Corporation Performance Standards and the Equator Principles (IV).
