The floating bridge concept for crossing the Bjornafjorden in Norway is the result of state-of-the-art engineering solving a previous impossible challenge. The more than 5,5 km floating bridge is believed to cost 1,7 billion EUR including VAT (2017).

Norway’s vision of creating a fixed link connection along the western part of the country from Stavanger to Trondheim has stimulated the development of a floating bridge structure which is truly innovative.

The deep fjords in Norway makes it extremely costly to place a pylon in the center, as this pylon would basically be of the same size as a skyscraper standing on the bottom of the sea. The solution is to utilize know-how from the offshore industry and replace the ground-based pylon with floating pontoons.

Together with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, Ramboll is involved in the preparation of the design basis for the preliminary design of the bridge. Further, Ramboll is performing a structural safety level assessment of the concept, and a reference study of load combination factors for traffic and wind load on large bridges.

It is expected that the concept study will continue until the end of 2019 followed by a pre-study in the beginning of 2020.
