FPSO Teekay Petrojarl I was operating on the Glitne Field for Statoil, and was planned to operate for another five years there. In turn, the owner of the FPSO, Teekay Petrojarl Production, was evaluating to extend the lifetime of the FPSO with 15 years.

Topsides FEED

Ramboll was contracted to carry out a FEED study for the entire topsides. The FEED study work resulted in input to yard scope ITT specification and a cost estimates. The yard stay would comprise inspection, overhaul, repair and design activities. As part of the FEED study Ramboll established a 3D model for the main part of the topsides process area. The model was made by converting offshore 3D scan to a PDMS model.

3D scanning provided vital project basis

3D scanning played a central role in the project. At project kick-off, the only data material available for Petrojarl 1 was one drawing and five photos. Thus, it was an essential part of the project to carry out comprehensive 3D scanning and surveys of the entire FPSO as the basis for the redesign and lifetime extension studies.

The size and complexity of the project made it a major milestone project for Ramboll’s scanning specialists. One of the challenges of the survey project was that the FPSO remained in operation during the scans. 560 scans were carried out by two people over a time span of only three weeks and Ramboll was able to deliver the entire scanning project within 10 weeks.

Deluge system upgrade

The scope of work furthermore included detailing of deluge systems upgrade as described in the pre-engineering study, especially regarding close-out of temporary deviations listed SUTAOC. Because of a modified layout, it was also necessary to carry out identification and evaluation of new or changed fire protection areas. This included estimation of fire water demand in order to ensure that firewater pump capacity would meet authority requirements. Finally, Ramboll handled FEED design of the safety automation system interface.

Power generation and distribution system

The electrical part of the FEED design covered topsides power generation and distribution system for main, emergency and UPS power. The lifetime assessment was carried out on both medium and low voltage switchboards. Replacement and retrofit solutions were described in the study report giving the client an overview of how to secure the systems for another 15 years. Each solution included a cost estimate. A new UPS philosophy was proposed to secure vital equipment and optimise maintenance and spare part stock.
