Telecom operators in Dubai want the new innovative camouflage solution, Palm Tree with date fruit called Arabian Date Palm Tree. Ramboll was requested by client in Dubai to provide so called “Arabian Date Palm Trees”.
Without knowledge about Date Palm, RTSEA studied and researched all information about it. The date palm from which the tasty fruit is Phoenix Dactylifera. Trimmed in this manner the date palm will grow to heights of 100 ft (45.7 m). The broad gray trunk is patterned with diamond-shaped leaf scars and is up to 16 inches in diameter. The large greenish or bluish gray pinnate leaves are typically 18-20 ft (5.5-6.1 m) long by 2 ft (0.6 m) wide. The fruit is a drupe known as a date. They are oval-cylindrical, 3–7 cm long, and 2–3 cm diameter, and when unripe, range from bright red to bright yellow in colour, depending on variety. Dates contain a single seed about 2–2.5 cm long and 6–8 mm thick.
Design based on American Codes, EIA-222-G for wind load calculation and AISC for member and connection design. Design wind speed 37 m/s twist and sway 1° at operational wind speed 26 m/s. Wind area of fruit and leaves are taken into account, antenna loading area is 4 sq.m., material is mind steel JIS SS400, fall arrester system is CABLOC, internal feeder routing and step bolt external climbing.
After design proposal got an acceptance, prototype was started by making new molds of date fruit, bark and leaves are existing molds. The leaf support at top of pole was modified for 10 fruit bunches. Prototype of top section installed with 30 leaves and 10 fruit bunches were finished in 3 weeks and customer came to approve before production.
Up to today Ramboll has delivered more than 20 Arabic Date Palm Trees to clients in Dubai and surroundings.
