As part of a broader masterplan to expand the UK's second-busiest airport to a capacity of 40 million passengers, Gatwick carried out a series of refurbishments to its South Terminal. We provided engineering expertise on several projects, including the relocation of the airside/landside boundary to accommodate more airside retail space.

Part of this work was the addition of a rooftop extension to an existing three-storey steel frame structure in the South Terminal international departure lounge. The existing structure had been designed with the capacity to add an extra floor built-in. It was thus ready for framing using further steel columns, forming a 9m x 36m sway frame. Sheet steel was chosen for the cladding to match the existing façades. The extension has been fitted with a conventional flat Sarna roof.

Our brief also included the installation of two steel frame glazed roof lights, measuring 3m x 16m and 4m x 5.5m, which increase the amount of natural light in the retail space. A steel-frame chiller plant deck was added to the roof and several holes punched through the existing slabs so that M&E services could be routed through the terminal.
