RWD maesurment in Norway

In 2021, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration procured a tender for Rolling Wheel Deflectometer measurements for the national road network throughout Norway. This is to be able to plan and prioritize maintenance and strengthening activities based on the results.

Ramboll has now been measuring the first two years and about 14.000 km of the roads.

Maintenance control

The national road network is divided into operation and maintenance areas where the Swedish Transport Administration hires various contractors to manage road maintenance.

The Swedish Transport Administration is divided into ten maintenance districts, which also hire consultants to check how these contracts are carried out. These contracts are called maintenance control and in 2020 Ramboll won a 4-year contract for 7 of the 10 procured contracts.

Within Ramboll's contract for maintenance control, 21 employees and sub-consultants work from Kalmar in the south to Kiruna in the north with year-round checks, most of them in the field every day and in winter also nights and weekends if necessary. The work consists of systematically checking the requirements applicable for the season described in the contract between the Swedish Transport Administration and the Operating Contractor in a document called SBV (Standard Road Description). This work is carried out in practice with the help of an app from Ramboll's partner BM System where registered observations are delivered to the Swedish Transport Administration digitally, with images, description and coordinates. The information from Ramboll is processed by the Swedish Transport Administration's employees, together with other observations and factors to verify that the roads are as safe as possible for all road users.

Condition measurement of road surface and road area

The Swedish Transport Administration annually monitors the condition of the state-paved road network with a measuring vehicle. The condition measurements have been ongoing since 1986, and RST has been involved throughout the period.

Condition measurement of road markings

The condition measurements shall give the Swedish Transport Administration the overview they need to create an idea of the current state of the road network, with respect to the longitudinal road marking.

The result is used as an internal control tool in the distribution of maintenance money between the six regions. The measurements also provide answers to how well the state road network meets the Swedish Transport Administration's functional requirements, requirements that are set to give road users and the cars' support systems the visual guidance they need to ensure that the vehicles can be driven safely.

In connection with the project, delivery and guarantee checks are also carried out on the contractors' work. A job that requires a great deal of experience and habit of functional control, which Ramboll RST is a leader in in the Nordic countries.
