“CCUS is a necessary bridge between the reality of today’s energy system and the increasingly urgent need to reduce emissions. Not only can it avoid locking in emissions from existing power and industrial facilities, it also provides a critical foundation for carbon removal or negative emissions.” - Dr. Fatih Birol, Executive Director, International Energy Agency
While proven capture technologies are available and the strategic goal is clear, there remain challenges for the large-scale deployment of CCUS. Appropriate financial frameworks are only gradually being developed, the industry is immature, and technologies are still expensive. However, developments like increased policy incentives, establishment of clusters, technological development, and optimisation of the relevant industry applications will drive cost reductions and deployment.
Ramboll is taking part in this positive development and has over several years been assisting clients in the assessment and development of projects within carbon capture and CO2 transport, utilisation and storage. With a large team of experts across the full CO2 value chain and more than 50 CCUS projects successfully carried out for clients over the last two years, Ramboll is a leading technical advisor in Europe within this area. We have a deep understanding of the industry, the technologies and their application and so we can help clients navigate the challenges and pitfalls that projects in this market entail.
Over the last years, Ramboll has also been providing management, commercial and environmental assistance to developers and governments in the development of overall strategies, business plans, and environmental assessments and plans for CCUS projects.
Ramboll’s consulting expertise
We have a deep understanding of the full CO2 value chain and the role CCUS has in the decarbonisation of various industries. We work with different types of clients – facility owners, developers, governments, and banks. We work on all levels – from the development of input to CCUS strategies for countries to the practical application and optimisation of carbon capture on specific facilities.
Ramboll is supporting owners and developers across Europe in the planning and implementation of carbon capture at existing or new facilities on biomass, waste-to-energy and gas fired power plants and industrial facilities.
We are also involved in a range of projects that include the transport of CO2 by different means, i.e. pipeline, road rail, ships.
Furthermore, utilisation of CO2 as part of Power-to-X applications is an area where Ramboll is a leading consultant in Europe.
Based on Ramboll’s extensive oil and gas experience, we are in a unique position to also provide advice and engineering on projects relating to the storage/sequestration of CO2.
Our services include the full range of strategic advisory / technical advisory / owner’s engineering / EPCM services which are required to develop, assess, plan, design, procure and implement large and complex projects, including:
- Strategic studies, due diligence, environmental planning and assessment
- Technology assessments, feasibility studies and business case development
- Project definition, including budgeting, procurement strategy and conceptual layout
- Preparation of tender documents, evaluation of proposals, negotiations and contract closure
- Contract management
- Supervision and management of the implementation of the projects including design reviews and supervision of construction and commissioning
Ramboll can design the full capture process including the chemical process, thermodynamics, mass-, energy- and carbon balance, efficiency and financial performance. Furthermore, Ramboll can, as one of few consultants, prepare 3D layouts of carbon capture systems for different technologies thus allowing us to evaluate and optimise the often scarce space available.
