Tunnel engineering
Specialising in tunnel engineering and tunnel design to create sustainable and resilient connections supporting the efficient movement of people and goods.

We are involved in the delivery of some of the world's largest and most ambitious tunnels, delivering tunnel engineering and tunnel design as specialist consultants, including the Fehmarnbelt tunnel connecting Denmark and Germany, the Fehmarsund tunnel in Germany and the first bored tunnels in Stockholm Metro’s network through our role on Yellow Line.
Tunnels provide safe and reliable infrastructure that supports economic growth and enhances connectivity. By combining tunnel engineering expertise with environmental and social considerations we deliver on all tunnel types. International experience and innovative tunnel design solutions ensure that clients' needs are met while contributing to the well-being of urban communities.
Our areas of expertise include immersed tunnels, bored tunnels, mined tunnels, micro tunnelling, cut and cover tunnels, tunnel safety, across all project stages. A multidisciplinary approach guarantees high-quality solutions for all types of underground structures, including those requiring specialised techniques. We are experienced in special disciplines such as tunnelling under and close to existing structures, permanent diaphragm walls, and top-down methods.
Tunnel engineering and tunnel design work covers investigation, preconstruction, and construction phase investigations, including primary site exploration, detailed surface investigations, detailed sub-surface investigations, onshore and offshore geophysics, and tunnel mapping. We focus on creating sustainable and climate-resilient tunnel solutions that address urban challenges and contribute to the well-being of communities.

The Marselis Tunnel will provide a faster, more direct, and safer connection between Aarhus Port and the E45 motorway via Åhavevej, while diverting heavy traffic away from Marselis Boulevard.
18 km long and 40m underwater. Fehmarnbelt, the world's longest immersed tunnel, showcases innovative thinking and challenges engineering standards. Ramboll is advisor to the client, Femern A/S, within the Ramboll-Arup-TEC Joint Venture partnership.
As Stockholm expands, the city makes bold investments in its transport infrastructure. Central to this is the Yellow Line - a major metro extension combining digital innovation, engineering scale, and social value in one of Northern Europe’s most ambitious transit projects.
The Dreilindentunnel is a subproject under the main development programme of Lucerne Station that is one the largest railway stations in Switzerland which reached the limits of its capacity. The Swiss Railway authorities (SBB) is planning to expand the rail network with a new through going underground station to increase the capacity and shorter travel times.
The project for “Nordhavnsvej” is the first stage of a new road to Copenhagen’s Nordhavn (North Harbour). Nordhavn is an old industrial and port area, planned to be developed into a new urban area in the north-eastern part of Copenhagen. When fully developed, the urban area is planned for 40,000 residents and 40,000 workplaces.
